Gautam Waghela’s stunning 148 sees Settle win their first game of the league season
DIVISION ONE
SETTLE VS CHORLEY
Settle won the toss and elected to bat first against Chorley. Will Davidson and captain John Davidson made a positive start inside the first 10 overs.
An opening partnership of 47 soon became 47-2 though, as Toby Johnston bowled Will Davidson (28) then in the following over, Luca Doyle bowled his fellow opener for 17.
Zane Nirodi and Gautam Waghela stabilised the innings with a fine partnership of 74. Nirodi struck seven boundaries in making 40. Waghela powered on and went past 50 for the third time in eight games for the Yorkshire side.
A big score was looming for the hosts, James Snowden’s 32 off 41 got the score past 200 but his innings was cut short as he was ran out by Johnston.
Waghela went to a magnificent century with four overs to go as the scoreboard read 238-5.
Waghela went into destruction mode to whack six fours and three sixes. The Indian batsman was dismissed on the final ball of the innings but 148 off 122 balls got Settle to 295-6.
An imposing target for the visitors, Harry Barclay and Edwin Moulton’s 77 run partnership gave Chorley a sniff after the early loss of Miller Childs for eight. But the wickets tumbled with the required run rate increasing. 88-1 became 110-4 and despite an entertaining knock of 63 off 46 by Will Moulton, any hope of chasing 296 was ended when he was out LBW by Harry Snowden.
Will Davidson (3-36) and Snowden (4-28) ran through the middle to lower order. Chorley losing their last six wickets for 11 runs. A first league win of the season at the 10th attempt by a convincing margin of 107 runs .
NETHERFIELD VS BLACKPOOL
Khalil Patel got Blackpool on top with two early inroads of both openers, Reece Irving and Richard Everett. Nimesha Gunasinghe playing his first game for the hosts batted excellently with skipper Ben Barrow. A maiden 50 on debut for Gunasinghe including 2 sixes but it was 50 and out for the Sri Lankan as Patel was on target again trapping him LBW.
It’s been a terrific season so far for John Huck, averaging 61 and going past 50 eight times, his tremendous form continued making 86. Barrow also scored in the 80s with 89 but both fell short of their centuries as Geeth Kumara struck twice. The pair putting on 158 set the game perfectly into the home sides hands, after 50 overs, Netherfield setting 257 to win.
Charlie Parkinson and Isaac Medhurst kept it tight up top and were both rewarded with the wickets to dismiss openers, Kasim Munir (27) and Dylan Henshall (5). Blackpool struggled to find that one big partnership that saw Netherfield set 257. Joshua Boyne top scored with 41 but it was Oli Wileman (5-45) that saw the hosts to victory, the Seasiders all out for 183. Netherfield winning by 73 runs to go top of the table!
GARSTANG VS KENDAL
A shaky start by the visiting batters saw four wickets fall inside 11 overs. Lahiru Madushanka with three wickets and Cory Cater with one. Cole Abrahams (29) and James Bowman got the scoreboard ticking along nicely but when Abrahams was caught by Theo Smith and Ian Walling saw the back of Bradley Earl, Lewis Richardson and Harry Temperton it didn’t look likely that Kendal would bat out the overs. 177-8 but went Bowman past 50 bashing two sixes with the tail to get him to 81. Walling picked up his fourth of the day and when Louie Backhouse was caught, Kendal were all out after 44.2 overs for 206.
Tom Higson took a destructive approach to start the innings with a quick fire 47 off 33 balls. Matt Jackson got into the wickets column dismissing Higson and Michael Walling sandwiched between Freddie Fallows trapping Joseph Pearson LBW without scoring.
Smith and Madushanka both made scores in the twenties but couldn’t kick on and at 132-5 the game was in the balance. Mark Walling and Nisanth Nithian kept composed and guided Garstang to victory. Nithian the six man to go for a runner ball 37 but Walling with 42 not out hit the winning runs as Garstang won by four wickets.
LEYLAND VS ST ANNES
St Annes were made to bowl first away at Leyland. Luke Hands and Xander Eyre put on a 45 run partnership after the early wicket of opener Zak Willox. But the St Annes bowlers battled back well with three quick wickets to put Leyland on the back foot at 67-4.
Jacob Wright and Karl Cross both made 33 but the visitors had Adam Patel to thank to limit Leyland going ballistic with the bat at the back end of the innings.
Patel (6-73) also got St Annes an extra bowling point with the last ball of the innings, Leyland all out for 209 after exactly 50 overs.
The run chase started well but from 33-0, Sam Oldham took three much needed wickets, joined by Andrew Jacques dismissing Evan Dobson. At 55-4 the hosts needed someone to step up and Harry Birkman took responsibility into his own hands, punishing the ball to the boundary 13 times scoring 80 off 69 balls. The game looked to be going the way of St Annes but Birkman was bowled by Oldham (4-63) and Will Smith spun his way to two wickets which gave Leyland a fighting chance.
195-8 and with overs not an issue, Leyland needed two wickets to claim victory. Rory Urquhart and Alex Urquhart 17 run partnership saw the hosts to a two wicket win. A big win for St Annes in their fight for survival closing the gap to four points to third bottom Chorley.
LONGRIDGE VS CARLISLE
Longridge batted first after losing the toss. Rhys Morgan and Matthew De Villiers powered one maximum each but it was short stays for the pair scoring 15 and 18 respectively.
The theme of the innings saw the Longridge batters get themselves in but not kick on to score that big score. Only two batters didn’t score double figures as Joshua Mullin top scored on 42.
Nico Watt and Michael Slack took three wickets each and from 192-5 slipped to 204-9. Jake Durnell however smashed three maximums in the final over scoring 21 runs in total in a cameo of 22 not out.
Crucial runs from Durnell and Jonathan Millward, Longridge setting 240 to win.
Zephania Arinaitwe is known for his ability to score quick at the top of the order. Two fours and one six from 10 balls but it was one shot too many on 17 as he was caught by Rob Hollinghurst.
De Villiers proved too good for the top order, with three wickets of his own Carlisle in trouble at 32-4.
Brodie Glendinning and Alex Raybould provided some stability to the innings and at 113-4 the chase was back on.
Two quick wickets halted the progress but Raybould continued on his way to try chase down 240.
176-5 to 192-9 was a massive blow to Carlisle especially when Raybould (48) was stumped off the bowling of Durnell.
With 11 overs remaining, Carlisle needed 48 runs but with one wicket left. Craig Manchester tried to do what Durnell did at number 11 but the task was too difficult between him and Kieran Titterington. The final wicket in the 45th over by Joe Lyth saw Longridge win a thriller by 12 runs.
